Guildford opens Christmas with the Festive Family Fun Day on Sunday 15 November 2026. There is no evening countdown any more, and here is what replaced it.

Guildford’s Christmas season opens on Sunday 15 November 2026 with the Festive Family Fun Day in the town centre. Two sources give that date. Visit Guildford writes that “the season kicks off with the Festive Family Fun Day on Sunday 15 November, featuring plenty of exciting activities for everyone to enjoy, all free or low-cost” (Christmas in Guildford). Guildford Borough Council’s road closure schedule books the whole High Street for it that day, 7am to 6pm (town centre temporary road closures).

The thing most people are actually searching for, a countdown and a big switch-on moment, is the part that has changed.

There is no evening switch-on ceremony any more

If you remember Guildford’s lights being switched on at 7pm to a fireworks display, that was the old format. In 2018 the event ran on a Thursday: the Experience Guildford stage opened at 4pm outside Holy Trinity Church, a mascot parade set off up the High Street at 5pm, the Guildhall balcony show started at 6pm hosted by Eagle Radio’s Peter Gordon, the lights came on at 7pm and White Lion Walk sponsored a fireworks finale (Normandy Parish Council’s copy of the organisers’ programme).

Nothing of that shape survives in the current listings. The event moved to a Sunday and became a daytime one:

  • 2023: Sunday 19 November, from 11am. The council described music, dance and drama at Tunsgate Arch and Friary Street, a Christmas disco, snow falling outside the Guildhall, free performances, face painting, a giant snow globe for selfies with Santa’s elves, mascots on parade and a Christmas market (Enjoy festive family fun in Guildford this Christmas). It named no countdown and no switch-on ceremony.
  • 2025: Sunday 16 November, 11am to 4pm, on the High Street, free (Experience Guildford’s event page, archived). Again, no evening element.

So the honest answer to “what time do Guildford’s Christmas lights get switched on” is that in recent years there has been no advertised switch-on moment at all. The lights go up, the town holds a free family day, and the aggregator sites that still promise you a 7pm countdown and fireworks are recycling a programme from before the format changed. Treat any listing quoting Peter Gordon, the balcony show or a White Lion Walk firework finale as out of date.

A note on the name: the council’s closure table calls it the “Festival Family Fun Day”, while Visit Guildford, Experience Guildford and the council’s own news pages all call it the Festive Family Fun Day. Same event, same day.

When the programme lands

Late. In mid-September 2025, two months out, Experience Guildford’s own page for that year’s event carried the date, the time and the line “More details coming soon”. The full running order tends to appear in the last week or two before the day. We will add it here when it does.

The road closure, in full

The order for Sunday 15 November covers the High Street from Quarry Street to the junction with North Street and Chertsey Street, plus the side roads: The Shambles, Chapel Street, Market Street and Tunsgate Road. That extra strip of Tunsgate Road is the tell. It is the only autumn closure on the council’s list that takes it in, and Tunsgate Arch is where the 2023 event put its stage, choirs and snow globe.

The closure runs 7am to 6pm, considerably longer than the event itself, because it covers the build and the clear-down.

Parking, honestly

The Fun Day is a Sunday, and Sunday is a charging day in Guildford. Charges run from 11am to 5pm at the same rates as the rest of the week, so arriving at opening time puts you straight into the charging window. Three things are worth knowing:

  • Arrive and pay between 4pm and 5pm at the multi storeys and the larger surface car parks and the parking is free, and that ticket carries into the evening.
  • Guildford Park on Guildford Park Road is free all day on a Sunday.
  • Walnut Tree Close at Woodbridge Meadows is free at weekends.

The Castle, Tunsgate and Millbrook car parks are the closest to the closed section, and they are the ones that fill first on an event day. Full tariffs are on our parking in Guildford page, and anything else shut that week will be on the roadworks and travel page.

The rest of Guildford’s Christmas

  • Illuminate Guildford, the light trail through the castle grounds, opens on Saturday 14 November, the day before the Fun Day.
  • Christmas markets run from the Cathedral Christmas Fair on 20 and 21 November through to the farmers’ market on 15 December. Every date is on our Guildford Christmas markets page.
  • The Sparkle Vegan Market is listed on the High Street on the same day as the Fun Day, Sunday 15 November (Experience Guildford events).
