Guildford Castle's winter light trail returns 14 November with a reversed route and new installations. Adults £12.95, children £9.95, under-3s free.
Guildford Castle’s winter light trail is coming back for a third year, and this time the route runs the other way round. Illuminate opens on Saturday 14 November, and tickets are already on sale (Illuminate Guildford).
The organiser says the 2026 trail has been completely redesigned and reversed from the routes walked in 2024 and 2025, with brand new installations and light activations created for this year (event listing). The walk through the castle grounds takes about 30 to 40 minutes, which makes it one of the shorter winter trails in the area, and one of the few in a town centre rather than a country estate.
Tickets and prices
Entry is timed, with a limited number of tickets per session. The prices on the organiser’s ticket page:
- Adults: £12.95
- Children aged 3 to 16: £9.95
- Under-3s: free
- Marshmallow toasting: £4.50 per person
Tickets are sold through Fixr, and the organiser suggests booking soon because sessions are capped. The event is supported by Experience Guildford and Guildford Borough Council.
The organiser’s own site lists the opening date only; a closing date for the 2026 run had not been published there when we checked on 2 September.
What to expect
The trail loops through the historic castle grounds off Castle Street (GU1 3SX), with the Norman keep and the gardens lit up along the way. Hot chocolate, mulled wine and mulled cider are sold at the bandstand entrance, and there are marshmallow toasting pits along the route (Illuminate Guildford).
What it means for you
The castle has no visitor car park, so plan on the town’s car parks or the park and ride; the nearest options and evening charges are in our parking in Guildford guide. The short route and town-centre location make it an easy one with younger children: 40 minutes round the grounds, then somewhere warm on the High Street. More ideas for the season are in things to do in Guildford.
