Guildford's Slyfield tip opens 8am to 4pm Mon, Thu, Fri and 9am to 4pm weekends, closed Tue and Wed. No booking needed. Christmas Eve it shuts at 2pm.

Guildford’s tip, the community recycling centre on Moorfield Road at Slyfield, is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday. It opens 8am to 4pm on Monday, Thursday and Friday and 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. You do not need to book. The site is run for Surrey County Council, not the borough council (Surrey County Council, Guildford CRC).

The quick answer

  • Open: Monday, Thursday, Friday 8am to 4pm; Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Christmas: closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day; shuts at 2pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Other bank holidays keep normal hours.
  • No booking. Bring proof of a Surrey address on your first visit. Vans, pickups and trailers need a £10 permit.

Christmas and New Year 2026/27

The county council publishes standing bank holiday rules for every Surrey site rather than a fresh list each year. Applied to this year’s calendar:

Guildford CRC over Christmas 2026, applying Surrey County Council's published bank holiday rules
DateGuildford CRC
Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve)8am to 2pm
Friday 25 December (Christmas Day)Closed
Saturday 26 December9am to 4pm (normal Saturday)
Sunday 27 December9am to 4pm
Monday 28 December (Boxing Day bank holiday)Closed
Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 DecemberClosed (normal weekly closure)
Thursday 31 December (New Year's Eve)8am to 2pm
Friday 1 January (New Year's Day)Closed
Saturday 2 January9am to 4pm

Two judgement calls here, and we will confirm both. Boxing Day itself is a Saturday this year and the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December (GOV.UK). The council’s rule says “Boxing Day” is closed without saying which of the two days that means. We have shown Saturday 26 as open and Monday 28 as closed, the reading that follows the bank holiday, but check before you drive. And because Guildford already closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the site is open on only one weekday, Thursday 31 December, between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and then only until 2pm.

The nearest alternatives

When Slyfield is shut, three county sites are close enough to use. All three open seven days a week and follow the same Christmas rules.

Sources: Surrey County Council’s pages for Woking, Leatherhead and Witley, and its list of who can use a CRC, which names Woking among the four sites that admit pedestrians. For Send, Ripley and the Clandons, Woking is the obvious fallback; for the Horsleys and Effingham, Leatherhead.

Rules before you go

  • No booking. “You need not need to book a visit to any of Surrey’s CRCs,” the county council says; a booking trial at Camberley and Lyne has ended (visiting your CRC).
  • Proof of address on the first visit: a driving licence, this year’s council tax bill, a recent utility bill or a Surrey bus pass. Staff then give you a Surrey resident sticker for the windscreen.
  • Vans, pickups and trailers need a van permit: £10 a year, 12 visits, one per household (van permits).
  • Tyres cost £5 each at Guildford; bicycle tyres are free.
  • DIY and building waste is accepted at Guildford, within free limits; rubble, tiles and similar can be brought once every seven days in a car (construction and DIY waste). Guildford is one of only three Surrey sites that take asbestos.
  • Children below Year 7 must stay in the car, and pets stay in the car too.

After Christmas

Most Christmas waste does not need the tip. Plain paper wrapping and cards go in the recycling bin; foil and glitter wrap goes in the black bin. The borough’s bin rounds move over the holiday: see Guildford Christmas bin collections for last year’s changed days and when this year’s are due, and bin collection days for the normal weekly grid. Slyfield sits on the far side of the town centre for most of the borough; check the roadworks page before a Saturday run.
